BOISE, Idaho (KBOI) -- Do you find yourself reaching for a sugary drink or caffeine infused latte late in the afternoon just to make it through the day?
You're not alone - it can be rough staying motivated.
KBOI has been looking into easy energy enhancers to get you over that 3 o'clock slump. Most snacks are bought between the hours of 3-5 p.m here at KBOI. But as it turns out, boosting your energy has less to do about what you put into your body and more about how you can trick your mind.
Doctor Kerry Kuehl works with athletes at the human performance lab at OHSU. He says understanding the mind-body connection is key to unlocking your secret energy stores.
The first strategy? Stand up and Move.
"Get up after 45 minutes and move around or do light stretching, so you're never sitting continuously for more than 45 minutes," Kuehl said.
Or you can try one of those standing desks. You'll burn up to 400 calories a day while boosting your energy.
Another tip? Rock Out -- or at least have a little background music playing. It's what plenty of employees here at KBOI do. Music stimulates the brain and covers up white noise - such as a humming air conditioner - that can induce drowsiness.
Plant it. That's right - researchers from Washington State University found real green plants in the workplace help keep folks on task and actually increase their productivity by 12 percent.
Snack every two hours. Here's the rule - if you'd find it on the outer edges of the grocery store - fruits, vegetables, dairy, whole grains, lean meats - it's likely would make an energy-packed snack.
Another strategy? Check your posture. For every inch your head tilts forward, the amount of weight your neck supports, doubles and that effort leads to significant fatigue. You may want to consider a product that forces your shoulders back such as Posture Now.
Another good idea is to stay cool by setting your thermostat between 68 and 72 degrees as warmer temperatures will slow your mental function.
And aim your task lighting toward a wall or ceiling as direct lighting causes eye strain and fatigue.
A 10 to 15-minute power nap is enough to restore your energy without going too far into a deep sleep or you can fake a nap by doing a few minutes of deep breathing. That method can decrease stress so your body doesn't have to work so hard and you'll get an extra burst of energy.
Doctor Kuehl says a small cup of coffee isn't terrible but green tea is better, which in addition to caffeine, it's loaded with antioxidants. Even a cup of warm water can increases the body's metabolism.
