BOISE, Idaho (KBOI) -- Two Boise men have been charged with federal hate crimes after allegedly assaulting an African American man last year, the U.S. Attorney said Wednesday.

Wendy Olson said Jonathan Henery, 28, and Beau Hansen, 30, assaulted the man because of the color of his skin back on Oct. 20.

"From the first responding patrol officers, to the detectives, officers realized quickly this case was a major crime, a civil rights violation, not just a battery, that demanded the attention of our federal partners," said Chief Michael Masterson of the Boise Police Department.

They face up to 10 years in prison and a fine of $250,000.
