BOISE, Idaho (KBOI) - A 23-year-old man surfing in a canal Monday evening died after becoming tangled in a rope, the Ada County Sheriff's Office says.
The Ada County Coroner's Office identified the man as Michael Nelson of Boise and listed his death as a drowning.
Officials say Nelson was with family surfing on a large piece of plywood tied to a diversion damn near Five Mile Road in south Ada County just before 6:30 p.m. Officials say the man's foot got tangled in the rope and was pulled under water.
Deputies say he was under water between 10 to 15 minutes and could not be revived once he was brought up.
Nelson's grandfather says his grandson has four kids of his own. He said that he lives near the dam where his grandson drowned but was not out there when he was pulled out of the water.
Deputies estimate the depth of the water to be 20-25 feet.
