BOISE, Idaho (KBOI) -- After driving in Utah where the speed limit is 80 miles per hour on some stretches of interstate, Sen. Bart Davis wondered: why not Idaho?

So he prepared a bill

"It moves the speed limit to 80 if the Department of Transportation and their engineers suggest that stretch of road be safe for automobiles to travel at that rate of speed," said Davis, the Senate Majority Leader

The Idaho Falls Republican hopes to introduce the bill next week.

It would call for ITD engineers to decide what 65 mph roadways in Idaho are capable of handling 70 mph traffic and what 75 mph stretches are good to go at 80.

Presently there are only two states that allow you to drive 80 mph on the interstate: Texas, and our neighboring state of Utah.

Leading lawmakers think the bill has a good chance of passing unless something unexpected happens ... down the road.
