Family calls foul on mortgage deal

The Randall family

BOISE - Like many, the Randall family of Boise fell on economic hardship last year.

So, they decided to pursue a lower rate on their mortgage to help make ends meet. After negotiations with Nation Star Mortgage, everything seemed to be working out.

"Everything they asked us to do, we did, I mean to the letter," Kelly said.

The agreed payment of $715 was saving the Randall's $150 a month and the family says they paid the mortgage on time every month. But in December, they received a foreclosure notice and an eviction date of April 9.

The company said in the letter that the family was delinquent in payments from the original full amount.

"We didn't know what to do," the family said. "They have all the power."

The Randalls wondered - would they have to move in with the parents? Live in the car?

They immediately turned to local government assistance in Boise for help. Pam Briggs, a follow up specialist with Neighborhood Housing in Boise, took over their file.

"Our roll here is to make sure we are sending all the right information and following up to see if they revived it, if that's what they wanted and if there's anything else," Briggs said.

Nation Star replied saying they would have an answer in six months but the clock was ticking. The Randalls didn't have six months to wait. They'd be evicted from their home in four.

That's when they called the Truth Squad. We dug through the details to find out what happened. An email was sent to their mortgage broker asking for an explanation. Within six hours we had an answer for the Randalls.

"You sent them that email and later that afternoon we got a call, oh everything has been approved," Randall said.

While their problem may be solved for now, Briggs knows they are not the only families out there struggling.
