Boise State 5th in BCS debut

Boise State 5th in BCS debut
Boise State is fifth in the first Bowl Championship Series standings of the 2011 season.

The Broncos trailed Louisiana State, Alabama, Oklahoma and Oklahoma State in the standings, but was ranked ahead of Wisconsin, Stanford and Clemson.

The BCS is a three-headed system, averaging ratings from the USA Today/Coaches poll, the Harris Interactive college football poll and six combined computer rankings.

Boise State was ranked highest by the Harris voters at fifth, sixth in the computer average and seventh by the nation's coaches.

The margin between LSU and Alabama at the top of the standings is .0003, the slimmest between any two spots in the entire BCS top-25.

With two teams each in the top four, the SEC and Big 12 look likely to be the matchup for the national championship.

As a member of a BCS non-automatic qualifying conference, would have to be ranked 12th or higher in the BCS standings at the end of the season to earn a berth in a BCS bowl game.
