Now that the Oregon Ducks have so many uniform combinations that it is joked they could go an entire century without wearing the same look twice, the question looms: What are the Ducks donning Thursday night against Boise State?
It appears it will be white pants, white jerseys and a white helmet, meaning the No. 16 Ducks will stand out against the No. 14 Broncos' trademark blue turf at Bronco Stadium.
Last season there was more suspense with the uniforms. Coach Mike Bellotti and the team never let slip the uniform choice during the week, preferring to just let everyone see it on game day.
New coach Chip Kelly is being more forthcoming. The reason? He delegated the responsibility.
Meet Oregon's new uniform coordinator, Casey Martin.
Yep, that Casey Martin. Oregon's golf coach and former PGA Tour player. He once won a lawsuit against the tour that allowed him to use a cart because of a disability.
"He was very well-dressed on the PGA Tour. He did not dress like John Daly," Kelly said. "So I told him he could have it."
Martin told The Register-Guard Newspaper that he has already made his choices for the entire season and has submitted them to Kelly.
While the whole uniform coordinator thing is tongue in cheek, Oregon almost needs one. This summer the team rolled out yet new uniforms for the upcoming season.
The Ducks have had four new uniforms in the past decade, thanks in part to the school's relationship with Nike. The shoemaker's co-founder, Phil Knight, is an UO alum.
And while the revolving attire door might cause some old-schoolers to cringe, the players have always said they love the fact that the unis are ever-changing.
Currently the team has four different helmets, five jerseys and four pants, along with various socks and shoes.
As for the all-white look, the sports writer for The Oregonian newspaper dubbed it the "Stormtrooper" look.
___
INCREASED PATROLS: The Oregon State Police plan to increase patrols on highways between Oregon and Idaho because of Thursday night's game between the Ducks and the Broncos.
In addition to traffic caused by the game, police say more people are expected to take to the highways because of the Labor Day weekend.
It is about an eight-hour drive between Eugene and Boise.
"Driving is not a game, but there are some things that driving and football have in common. You lose your focus and fail to play the game responsibly then you will probably lose. If you lose your focus and fail to drive responsibly, you may end up possibly losing your life," said state police Sgt. Jason Reese.
___
DUCKS HEALTHY: The Ducks are mostly healthy going into Thursday night's game with one exception, senior wide receiver Rory Cavaille.
Cavaille injured his shoulder during fall practice and will miss the opener. He had been working out with the first-string receivers.
___
