MOSCOW - Saturday's win over Northern Illinois has the Vandals really thinking bowl game, and with good reason.
With the win, Idaho improves to 3-1 and now has eight games left to get to bowl eligible. A .500 record is all that's needed to get into a bowl game and the Humanitarian Bowl is excited about the prospects of getting the Vandals.
"We'd love to have Idaho," said Kevin McDonald, Humanitarian Bowl director. "It's been 12 years since their last bowl game and they have a huge alumni base here."
A six win season wouldn't guarantee a spot on the blue for bowl season. The WAC currently has three bowl tie-ins and any teams with a better record would take precedence. Unless the WAC finds them another place to play.
"As long as any 7-5 or better teams find bowls then Idaho could play in Boise," said Dave Chafin, WAC spokesman.
More simply, Idaho could leave no doubt by getting to 7-5 or 8-4, but they could also get help from none other than Boise State. With only three guaranteed bowls for the WAC, Vandal fans should actually root for BSU to make the BCS - possibly opening a spot for them if not another bowl eligible WAC team.
On the flip side, the Broncos would love the Vandals to keep winning to raise the profile of their schedule in the eyes of poll voters.
"We keep talking about better records from our WAC teams so I think that's good," Chis Petersen said when asked about Idaho Monday.
But Vandals rooting for Broncos and Broncos rooting for Vandals? Probably not happening anytime soon.
