POCATELLO - All it took was the threat of going out winless. The Idaho State Bengals finally won a game, 41-34 over Portland State on Saturday, to finish the season at 1-10 on the year.
Bengal Senior Clint Knickrehm scored from one- yard out with 32 seconds left to give Idaho State the win, ending a season-long 10-game losing streak. The win marked the second straight season that ISU won their season finale to avoid a winless season after defeating Sacramento State 36-33 in overtime last year.
Timberline alum Russel Hill had a season-high 307 yards with three touchdowns and no interceptions, and Kelvin Krosch caught six passes for 157 yards and three touchdowns for the Bengals.
Idaho State was able to score when it counted most thanks in part to six Portland State turnovers.
Chri Holmesley had two interceptions and a fumble recovery, and Jeff Tuua added a fumble recovery on second and goal from the ISU 4-yard line. George Ortiz also had an interception, and Dustin Tew ended the game with a pick in the end zone with three seconds left on a desperation throw.
Turnovers were the key to the win, because the Bengal defense still allowed 438 yards on the day.
ISU coach John Zamberlin signed a contract extention three weeks ago, keeping him in Pocatello through 2011. The win ended the nation's longest losing streak.
