What some consider the best college football game ever has brought considerable rewards to Boise State - but is there pressure to repeat that performance?
The 2007 Fiesta Bowl is responsible for pushing many recruits who were still on the fence in January, 2007 to sign with the Broncos. Defensive tackle Billy Winn (5th-leading tackler on team in 2009) didn't decide until after that game, and safety George Iloka has said recently that he's here because of the 2007 Fiesta Bowl.
Update: Sports Illustrated just named the 2007 Fiesta Bowl the best college football game of the decade. You can see SI.com's countdown
here.
The lore of that game continues in Phoenix as well. It happened to be the first year the Fiesta Bowl was held in the then-new University of Phoenix Stadium, and the bowl game was undergoing a transformation of sorts along with the short move from Sun Devil Stadium in Tempe.
"You helped put us on the map," said city of Glendale representative Laurie Sapp at press conference in Boise this week.
Sapp was part of a Fiesta Bowl delegation which traveled to both Fort Worth and Boise in the past few days to promote excitement and talk about the game. Nearly each member of that delegation commented on 'what Boise State would do for an encore,' and while the comments were tongue-in-cheek, there seemed to be the sense that if any team were to top that game, it would be the Broncos.
"We're not a team that spends much time looking backwards," said Coach Chris Petersen. "We're thankful and appreciative of that game, but [the current players] are excited to get their chance to play and experience the event."
And despite the impact the game had on many current players - only two current Broncos played in that game; Kyle Wilson and Richie Brockel. Without that experience to draw on, coach Petersen isn't worried about his team feeling pressure to 'live up' to the 2007 performance.
Winn agreed. "I don't think we need to duplicate it, but we do need to play as hard as those guys did back in that 2007 Fiesta Bowl," he said.
"That extra edge helped them win that game, and us playing like that, or how we played against Oregon will really help us out."
