COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo.—Boise State men’s basketball was picked to finish in a tie for second in the Mountain West preseason media poll, released Tuesday. Juniors Anthony Drmic and Derrick Marks were selected to the 2013-14 Preseason All-MW Team.

New Mexico, the defending regular-season and tournament champion, was picked to repeat. The Lobos garnered 23 of the 24 first-place votes and tallied 263 points to take the top spot in the poll. The Broncos finished with 214 points, tied with UNLV for second. The Runnin’ Rebels were tabbed with the remaining first-place vote.

Boise State returns all five starters from last season’s squad which finished 21-11 and advanced to the NCAA Tournament. Among the returners are Drmic and Marks who garnered second-team All-MW honors in 2012-13, as sophomores. Drmic led the league in scoring during conference games last season at 18.8 points per contest. Marks is the MW’s leading returner in field goal percentage, free throw percentage and steals. He ranked fifth in the conference in scoring and third in assists a year ago.

Also on the preseason all-conference team is Deonte Burton (Nevada), Khem Birhch (UNLV), Alex Kirk (New Mexico) and Kendall Williams (New Mexico). Due to a tie in balloting, six student-athletes were selected to the team. Williams, the reigning MW Player of the Year, was chosen as the 2013-14 Preseason Player of the Year.

Last season Boise State went 9-7 in MW play to finish in a tie for fourth. The preseason media poll slated the team to take eighth. In the first three seasons of head coach Leon Rice’s tenure, the Broncos have outperformed their predicted finish.

In 2010-11, the Broncos were predicted by the media to finish sixth in the Western Athletic Conference, and the team finished second. In 2011-12, the Broncos were predicted by the media to finish eighth in the MW, and the team finished tied for seventh.

San Diego State (fourth, 212 points) and MW newcomer Utah State (fifth, 156) round out the top five teams in the preseason poll. The entire list can be found below.
