Freshman Martarano impresses at charity softball game
Incoming Boise State freshman Joe Martarano is enrolled at school and participating in football workouts this summer. Not long after he was drafted 391st over by the Philadelphia Phillies, Bronco teammate Jonathan Brown asked Martarano to join the defense for the annual Bronco Classic charity softball game.

"I was pretty nervous because I'd never played softball before," Martarano quipped Saturday.

It didn't take him long to adjust.

In the home run derby, Martarano hit two balls completely out of the Memorial Stadium (about 360 feet) unseated two-time defending derby champion Joe Southwick.

"Everyone was kind of hyping me up," Martarano said. "Everyone was telling me its pretty hard, so I was a little bit nervous, but once I got the hang of it it wasn't too bad."

In the game, the defense hit three home runs in the first inning, but needed a walk-off home run from Beau Martin to win for the third straight year, 13-10.
