MOSCOW, Idaho (KBOI) - On the verge of the 2013 Vandal football season, first-year head coach Paul Petrino told the media that redshirt freshman Chad Chalich is the man to beat.

The Coeur d'Alene native did the most to separate himself from the pack this spring. One reason, his ability to run the option, and run it well. Coach Petrino says that's something that can give the Vandals an edge, even if there's a disadvantage at the line of scrimmage.

"It's actually something Chad did really well, so I think it was one of his strengths, and I think it'll help us run the ball. I think anytime that you feel, going into some games, that you're outmatched up front, as much as anything, the more option you can do the better. Because you can do angle blocks and you're reading guys, you're not blocking everybody. So it gives you a little opportunity to out finesse people, not necessarily just have to out muscle them," said Petrino.

Chalich will face competition from senior Taylor Davis who played in five games for the Vandals last season, and junior college transfer Joshua McCain. Coach Petrino said he thinks Matt Linehan will be a good quarterback, but said he'll probably redshirt this season.
