EUGENE, Ore.-- The Oregon Ducks now control their own destiny in the race for the Pac-10 crown.
With an Arizona loss to California on Saturday, Oregon is now the only Pac-10 team with one conference loss. Win out, and the Ducks will make thier first trip to Pasadena since the 1994-95 season.
Against the Sun Devils on Saturday, running back LaMichael James led the way with 150 yards on the ground and three rushing touchdowns, all scores in the first half, while quarterback Jeremiah Masoli threw for two touchdowns to help the Ducks to a 44-21 win.
Oregon also had another playmaker available against Arizona State on Saturday. Running back Lagarrette Blount, reinstated by the University and the Pac-10 this past week, did not play.
In the first quarter, the Ducks got off to a fast start. The first posession for Oregon resulted in a four-yard touchdown run by James, and then later in the first, James capped off an Oregon drive with a two-yard scoring run. The Ducks led 14-0 after one.
In the second, Arizona State running back Dimitri Nance ran for a score from the two yard line, and the Oregon lead was cut to 14-7.
On Oregon's next drive, kicker Morgan Flint made a field goal to put the lead at 17-7. The Ducks weren't done though, as James ran for another touchdown less than two minutes later to put the Ducks up 24-7. And with just about seven minutes left in the first half, Masoli found tight end Ed Dickson for a nine yard touchdown to make the halftime score 31-7.
Also in the first half, Sun Devils quarterback Brock Osweiler left the game after a big hit. His replacement, Samson Szakacsy, played the rest of the game for ASU.
The third quarter showed that the Sun Devils would not go down without a fight. Szakacsy scored on a sneak play to cut the lead at 31-7, and then after a Kenjon Barner lost fumble on the following kickoff, Szakacsy made a remarkable play to escape pressure and found receiver Kyle Williams in the endzone. The Duck lead was at ten, 31-21.
Near the end of the third, Oregon responded with a solid drive of their own, and it was capped off with a Masoli strike to reciever Jeff Maehl in the back of the endzone, and the Ducks took a 38-21 lead into the final quarter.
The final quarter's only scores were two field goals by Flint, including a career-long 43 yarder. The final score showed the Ducks won, 44-21.
Oregon (8-2, 6-1) plays in a crucial game next weekend at No. 17 Arizona. The Sun Devils (4-6, 2-5) play at UCLA next Saturday.
