SACRAMENTO, Calif. - Jordin Andrade took 14th place in the first round of the 400m hurdles at the USATF Outdoor Championships in Sacramento, Calif., and qualified for tomorrow's semifinals. Andrade placed fourth in his heat and ran a time of 51.56.

With the top four athletes from each of the three heats automatically qualifying for the semifinals, Andrade knew as soon as he crossed the line that he would advance. After redshirting this past outdoor collegiate season for Boise State, the Bonney Lake, Wash., picked up where he left off last year and ran an impressive race.

With his automatic qualification Friday afternoon, Andrade avenged his 17th-place finish at last year's championships that kept him from advancing to the next round. With 20 competitors in the field, the first-place time of the day came from Johnny Dutch (49.99) who was racing unattached. The top four athletes from each of the three heats will be joined by the athletes with the next-best four times to make the 16-competitor field for tomorrow's race.
