Marks on top of the Mountain
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo.—Boise State junior guard Derrick Marks was named Mountain West Player of the Week for the week ending Jan. 19, the conference announced Monday.

Marks averaged 20 points and six rebounds during Boise State’s wins against Nevada (Jan. 14) and Utah State (Jan. 18). This is the fourth-career player of the week selection for Marks, who tied for the league lead with three such honors last season.

Marks scored 21 points and had a season-high eight rebounds at Nevada. He also recorded five assists and two steals as the Broncos notched a road win and handed the Wolf Pack its first loss in MW play.

Equally impressive was his defense. Marks was the primary defender against Deonte Burton, the Mountain West’s leading scorer. Burton was limited to a season-low seven points, his first time scoring in single digits this season.

Marks followed that performance with 19 points against Utah State, including play after play in crunch time. The Chicago native scored 16 points in the second half, including 13 in the final 4:44, as the Broncos fought back from four down with 1:23 to play. Marks made a jumper with 39.7 seconds remaining to bring the Broncos within one.

He ran down and blocked a breakaway layup attempt after a long pass on the ensuing inbound play, then came to the other end and made the go-ahead basket with 23.6 seconds left.

This is the first player of the week nod for the Broncos this season.
