Bronco football underway in 2013
BOISE, Idaho (KBOI) - The countdown is on. With 26 days until the season-opener, Boise State football is back on the practice field.

As has become the norm, early-season practices are split between the veteran group in the morning and newcomer group in the afternoon.

Monday's morning practice was crisp, with players in helmets and jerseys - and media glancing frequently at rosters to match returning players with new jersey numbers.

Fourteen players have changed numbers, including defensive backs Donte Deayon (5), Darian Thompson (4), Cleshawn Page (3), Deon'tae Florence (29), Promise Amadi (17) and Chaz Anderson (6). Deayon said new numbers are assigned by coach Petersen if players request a change.

"I wanted to get out of 30. It's coach Pete's decision."

Other number changes:
RB Jamel Hart (10)
WR Troy Ware (14)
WR Taylor Pope (19)
S Taylor Loffler (24)
DE Kharyee Marshall (48)
OL Rees Odhiambo (71)
TE Jake Hardee (84)
TE Jackson Reed (91)

Redshirt sophomore lineman Greg Dohmen left the team after participating in spring football, Boise State confirmed.

Senior quarterback Joe Southwick looked good in passing drills, fitting passes into tight spaces and getting some great catches from his receivers - particularly Shane Williams-Rhodes, Geraldo Boldewijn and Aaron Burks.

"I think we can be really dangerous," junior wide receiver Matt Miller told media. "If we put all the piece together, keep working hard and improve every day I think we'll be a very dangerous unit."

Defensively, tackle Ricky Tjong-A-Tjoe forced a fumble and was effective at collapsing the pocket in 11-on-11 drills. The senior said he wasn't dreading the start of fall camp as in years past.

"It was such a grind, a struggle. Now it's like: do big things, it's senior year. I'm looking forward to it," he said.

Overall team speed looked impressive, with good closing speed on defense and several good moves to create open space from receivers and running backs.

The Broncos will come together in a single practice Friday, August 9.
