GAINESVILLE, Fla. (AP) — Florida has hired Jeff Choate as special teams coordinator and outside linebackers coach.

Choate, who coached last season at Washington State, comes to Gainesville after serving as UTEP's defensive coordinator the last few months.

He has nine years of special teams experience, including six at Boise State (2006-2011). He also had stints at Eastern Illinois (2005) and Utah State (2003-04).

Gators coach Will Muschamp, who met Choate while working as defensive coordinator at Texas, says his newest assistant is a "high-energy coach, an outstanding recruiter and evaluator, and has a reputation as one of the top special-teams coaches in the nation."

The position became available when Florida promoted former special teams coordinator D.J. Durkin to defensive coordinator, replacing Dan Quinn.

Note: Choate joins former Boise State coach Brent Pease on head coach Will Muschamp's staff.
