The Idaho State Police Commercial Vehicle Safety Section is hosting a two day Safe Driving event for all area high school students, teachers, and parents. It will be held April 26th and 27th, 2011 at Idaho State Police Headquarters in Meridian.

The Safe Driving Day is a program to help parents and teens learn more about safe driving habits and dangerous driving behaviors that teenage drivers can have. There will be demonstrations that provide hands on experience for everyone. You can try the driving obstacle course, the texting tricycle race, or the new state-of-the-art driving simulator.

Our goal is to reduce the number of people injured and killed every year in crashes that could have been avoided. Currently one of the biggest factors in fatal crashes involving teenage drivers is distractions, including texting and using cell phones. Recently, in Idaho, several crashes have occurred that involved teenagers who were texting while driving. Unfortunately, some resulted in tragic consequences.

Texting and driving needs to be outlawed. On an almost weekly basis I have had a close call with a young person texting and driving. Had I not seen them texting and been driving defensively, I would have been side swipped on numerous occassions.
