FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Meridian Youth Baseball and Softball – Success on the Diamond and in our Community

Seven area All Star Teams have had major success in the state and are now headed to Pacific Northwest Regionals in Lynden, WA, Medford, OR, and Meridian, ID. Two girls’ softball teams, the 10U Falcons and the 12U Hurricanes, finished second in their respective brackets at last week’s state tournament in Twin Falls, ID. The Hurricanes went 3-1 in pool play and lost a 3-2 nail-biter in the 6th inning of the championship game. As a result of their performance, the Hurricanes will move on to Regionals in Lynden, WA. The 14 girls leave Wednesday, July 22 to make their 600 mile trek. The caravan leaves Settler’s Park, the home of Meridian Youth Baseball and Softball (MYB/S), at 6:45 AM on Wednesday.

The boys’ teams have had success all season, with the 10U and 11U teams both winning their state brackets. They head to Medford this week to compete at Regionals. The 12U-70’ and 13U boys teams also took first in state, and are hosting the Pacific Northwest Regionals this week Meridian.

Winners of the Softball and Baseball Regionals advance to the Babe Ruth World Series.

The success of these young athletes is almost as impressive as their ability to give back. This year, the MYB/S program hosted two charitable tournaments, to raise money for the Bryanna Toney Memorial Fund and to support the recovery of coach Scott Simmons, who was seriously injured in an accident last year. The Toneys are a long time MYB/S family who lost their daughter to a debilitating disease last year. A touching ceremony kicked off the tournament, held over the Fourth of July, and which donated 10% of all proceeds to the fund. In an amazing turn of events, Scott celebrated his teams’ state victory on the one-year anniversary of his accident.

The MYB/S Babe Ruth/Cal Ripken league includes over 1,000 area athletes, ranging in age from 4 to 15. The program encourages sportsmanship, teamwork, discipline, and community involvement. 2009 marks the first full year of operational facilities at Meridian’s Settler’s Park, a beautiful full service facility which includes 8 baseball and softball fields.
