TV Entertainment Celebrity - "Sheriff John" (Rovick)

TV Celebrity Turns 90

On October 2 (2009), Los Angeles County’s iconic KTTV's (Channel 11) "Sheriff John" Rovick turns ninety years old. During the 1950-60 eras, John Rovick was a very popular and influential TV personality that played a friendly, fatherly law enforcement officer that hosted two Los Angeles-based kiddies shows: the "SHERIFF JOHN'S LUNCH BRIGADE (11:30am to 12:30pm), and an afternoon show called the "SHERIFF JOHN'S CARTOON TIME". He is one the true originators and unsung pioneers in the early beginning in the development of children television entertainment.

For Baby-boomers growing up in Southern California during those long-ago eras, “Sheriff John” (Rovick) played an important and very meaningful part in these once youngsters lives. What is Los Angeles’ lost had become Boise, Idaho gain. For nearly a quarter of a century, the residents there have had a well respected and remembered Southern California celebrity living quietly amongst them and probably didn’t even know it. HAPPY BIRTHDAY, SHERIFF JOHN!

I was a constant viewer/fan when I was a little boy growing up in Los Angeles. Mr. Rovick's warmth and charm easily made him my favorite television personality, and I thank him for many hours of meaningful entertainment.

A daily staple of life. A show we depended upon. A man that gave a sense of stability, structure and good citizenship on a local level. The birthday song is iconic--many of us who watched religiously have sung it with good humor and fond feelings.

Sheriff John you were a hero to so many of us. I remember you well in the 50's and 60's. If only my six kids could have known you. You will be remembered by all here and in the heavens to come. God Bless

Sheriff John is one of my childhood favorites along with Engineer Bill, Captain Kangaroo (Bob Keshan), and Red Skelton. A good man; a man who cared about children. May God continue to bless him.

Wow. Sheriff John! I just came across a YouTube on his lunch brigade and it sure brought back a lot of my childhood memories growing up in Westchester in the late 50's and early 60's! Wholesome TV: what a concept! Thanks Sheriff John!

Sheriff John, Thank you for the clean and decent role model you were for me and countless others! You helped us to grow up good and upright just like the maggio carrots you use to take care of. One of your kids.

What a good and decent exceptional role model. He brought peace, stability and a sense of belonging to me. Even though my peanut butter sandwich didn't look like like his more deli looking sandwich, I was part of his family. God Bless You

Growing up in Anaheim, CA, I watched Sheriff John from 1965-1970 on KTTV(from my ages 1-6). He always presented positive, friendly, and educational messages which my parents had encouraged me to see. A belated happy birthday, Sheriff John!

Sheriff John wished me happy birthday on TV over 50 years ago. I want to return the favor. I have emailed KTTV in Los Angeles asking for help. I could not find any news item mentioning his birthday, which is sad considering this milestoneof his.

His former address is 2420 W Bannock St, Boise, Idaho 83702 His home recently sold and we are trying to find out where he moved to but it was recent enough that he moved that any mail sent to his old home should be forwarded!
