Sgt. Major Durbin, a 17 year old Boise native has been with the Treasure Valley Young Marine unit for 7 Years. Starting as a recruit, Durbin has worked diligently to rise to the level of a regional, and hopefully, national representative of the Young Marine program. With a focus on Drug Demand Reduction and Leadership, he was chosen as the Northwest Regimental Sgt Major, and now the Division Young Marine of the year. The Northwest regiment encompasses Washington state, Oregon, Idaho, Montana, Nevada, Utah, Arizona, California and Hawaii. In receiving this honor Sgt Major Durbin represents Young Marine Units across the Western United States with hundreds of Young Marines in those units. He will accompany veterans and senior national representatives of the program on a historic tour of Guam and Iwo Jima next month and be given the opportunity to be considered as the National Young Marine of the year.
Today Sgt Major Durbin and the NCO's with the Treasure Valley Young Marines hosted an all day conference at the Young Marine facilty at Mountain Cove. Sgt Major Durbin addressed the participants and talked about his experience.
The Young Marines is a youth education and service program for boys and girls, ages 8 through completion of high school. The Young Marines promotes the mental, moral, and physical development of its members. The program focuses on character building, leadership, and promotes a healthy, drug-free lifestyle. The Young Marines is the focal point for the U.S. Marine Corps' youth Drug Demand Reduction efforts. The Treasure Valley Young Marines are the local chapter of the national program. With roughly 40 Youth and Adult Staff members the program has enjoyed a growing membership in recent years.
