Winter is coming! Make sure you don't get stuck without heat

BOISE, Idaho (KBOI) - There's a chill in the air, and as continue to drop this winter your furnace will be working extra hard to keep you warm. | How cold will it get?

But heating companies say the coldest time of year is their busiest, because many furnaces max out and require repairs.

A-1 Heating and Air Conditioning says they have been fairly busy through the month of November, but are expecting the number of calls they receive to triple when temperatures start falling into the 20s.

"As temperatures drop, more and more calls come in," service technician Matt Buchach said.

It's a formula that A-1 says is proved true each and every winter. Next week, the company says they could see close to 150 calls every day.

"Once it gets colder out and everyone starts having issues it gets super busy," Buchach said.

Right now, Buchach and other technicians have mostly been doing maintenance work, and have been able to get to most calls within a few hours. But when the winter chill settles into the Treasure Valley, they're expecting to have more repairs to do, and longer wait times.

"It can be days if it gets cold enough in the wintertime," Buchach said."That's something we don't want but we can only get to so many people."

A-1 says the coldest days are their busiest because there is no easy way to escape the bite of winter if your furnace goes out.

"Most of the summer we're going to be able to open our windows and get by for a day or two without cooling," Buchach said. "But in the wintertime if it's five degrees outside, it's just getting colder at night and they can't get through that."

A-1 says they have someone on-call around the clock for emergencies, but Buchach says the best way to make sure your furnace holds up is to have it maintained on a regular basis.

"We can catch a lot of things before they affect the rest of the furnace which can save you a lot of money in the long run," Buchach said.

If you haven't had your furnace checked, A-1 says the sooner you can do it, the better. The company recommends getting your furnace checked out in the fall, and your air conditioning checked in the spring. That way, during the hottest and coldest points of the year you'll be in good shape and can have peace of mind knowing everything is working properly.
