Man dead, woman found with slit throat on Idaho highway

SPOKANE, Wash. (AP) — A northern Idaho man is dead and his wife is hospitalized in Seattle after a weekend attempted murder-suicide.
An Idaho State Police trooper came across a vehicle flashing its emergency lights on state Highway 3 just south of St. Maries at about 2 a.m. Sunday and found a woman with her throat slit.
Benewah County Sheriff Dave Resser tells The Spokesman-Review that 44-year-old Mary McGreal was able to speak to officers. She was hospitalized in serious condition Monday, but was expected to survive.
Sheriff's deputies found 49-year-old Kurt McGreal on the floor of a room in their house. He had tried to cut his throat, started a fire and then shot himself in the head. Resser says McGreal died before he could be transported to the hospital.
