NAMPA, Idaho (KBOI) - The Nampa School District Board of Trustees voted Monday night to close Sunny Ridge Elementary School for the next school year as part of its plan to overcome a budget shortfall.

The board also announced that its projected deficit for the district is even worse than originally thought.

They estimate the deficit at $5.1 million, rather than the previously reported $4.3 million.

The district says most of the students from Sunny Ridge will attend nearby Lake Ridge Elementary School next year, and others will switch to Iowa and Reagan elementary schools.

District officials say they examined all of their elementary schools to determine which ones had lower populations and which had capacity to have more students.

Sunny Ridge currently has 392 students enrolled. The school was built in 1969 and doesn't have a lot of newer amenities, according to the district.

Lake Ridge was built in 2008.

The district sent letter home to parents Friday notifying them of the proposal.

Some parents at the board meeting expressed anger over how the district handled the announcement of the proposed closure.

One parent said the board should be ashamed that they waited until after the levy vote passed by voters last Tuesday to reveal the closure plan.

The board estimates the district will save $500,000 a year by not operating Sunny Ridge.

Officials say teachers will probably be able to find work at other nearby schools due to the number of retiring teachers.

The school board vote was 4-1 in favor of closure.
