Rental Homes: 'One of the most clever scams I've ever seen'

BOISE, Idaho (KBOI) -- If the rental home you're looking at seems too good to be true it just might be.

The Ada County Assessor says a rental scam is currently being reported in the Treasure Valley.

Scammers find local homes for sale, find out the home owner's name and then list the property for rent on various websites.

The phony rental ads claim the "owner" had a home listed for sale through a realtor, but that they have since decided to post the home for rent on their own.

When these ads are responded to, the imposters then send a rental application to scam targets to obtain personal information, and ask that deposit money be sent either directly or through an attorney, before the renter can obtain the keys and access the property.

"This is one of the most clever scams I've ever seen," said Bob McQuade, Ada County assessor said. "My office has received many phone calls from individuals wanting to confirm the legal owner of a specific home, however, since the actual owner's name is used, this scam appears very legitimate. We want to be sure people are aware this scam is out there, so they can keep themselves from falling victim."
