The Boise State offense ran up a 28-19 win over the defense Saturday, earning showers and dinner in the Blue & Orange spring game for the second straight year.

Joe Southwick completed 12-20 passes for 113 yards and a 25-yard touchdown pass to Geraldo Boldewijn. That pass - a ball on a rope from the pocket to the front left corner of the end zone - was the longest completion of the day, primarily thanks to the blustery winds whipping through Bronco Stadium all afternoon.

"It was hard to hit the big pass," said Southwick afterwards. He had two long attempts with the wind at his back fall well in front of receivers downfield.

Sophomore-to-be running back Jay Ajayi led the ground attack with 69 yards and a touchdown on 11 carries. Most of his handoffs came from Southwick.

"I think we've got a nice foundation set with those two guys," coach Chris Petersen said. "Jay [Ajayi] had a nice spring, he picked up right where he left off last year."

The defense played without several key players, especially in the secondary. Jeremy Ioane and Bryan Douglas have missed most and all of spring drills respectively. On the defensive line, senior Ricky Tjong-a-Tjoe played sparingly, as did Demarcus Lawrence. Sam Ukwuachu was not present for the scrimmage; Petersen said he was dealing with personal issues but would be active with the team through summer and fall.

"We got some guys we're counting on in the fall," Petersen said of the injured players. "We're going to be counting on some of those young guys coming in in the fall," he added.

Petersen does hope the players unable to participate in the spring game will be back and healthy for the start of fall camp in August.

Big plays happened even at the short-handed positions. Sophomore cornerback Donte Deayon returned an interception 30 yards for a score, and lineman Tyler Horn intercepted a Grant Hedrick pass early in the scrimmage.

The team meets for the final time this spring on Monday to review tape and correct mistakes made on the field Saturday. Monday's practice will help direct individual and player-led summer workouts.
