Mountain West adds ROOT Sports as TV partner
The Mountain West announced a television partnership with ROOT Sports Rocky Mountain, beginning with the 2013 football season.

In a press released, the conference said about ten football games and a minimum of 25 basketball games will be televised in high definition by ROOT Sports Rocky Mountain each year.

ROOT Sports Rocky Mountain is available in Idaho, but is not the primary regional sports network offered by DirecTV, Dish Network or CableOne. Boise-area residents receive ROOT Sports Northwest.

"Games carried on ROOT SPORTS Rocky Mountain will generally not be available on ROOT SPORTS NW," Mountain West Deputy Commissioner Bret Gilliland told KBOI-TV via email.

"The only exceptions could be games involving Boise State which could be carried on Northwest."

Majority ownership of ROOT Sports Northwest was recently purchased by the Seattle Mariners. The channel also carries Big Sky Athletics and Seattle Sounders soccer games.

Conflicts preventing Boise State events from airing on ROOT Sports Northwest in Boise could push those events to a different subscription channel or even local TV, Gilliland said.

"Sub-licensing in certain local markets where necessary/appropriate is a possibility," he wrote. "Those logistics will be addressed on a case-by case basis as the selection process plays out for each season."

Boise State fans can receive ROOT Sports Rocky Mountain, and most other regional sports networks via satellite by purchasing sports packages from DirecTV or Dish Network.

At this time, CableOne has not offered comment on whether it will switch its ROOT Sports channel from Northwest to Rocky Mountain the same way it does for Utah Jazz basketball broadcasts.

Mountain West games broadcast by ROOT Sports Rocky Mountain will also be available on the Mountain West Digital Network (MWDN), an internet-only video channel planned to operate from the conference's website, Subscriptions will not be required.

ROOT Sports Rocky Mountain, Pittsburgh and at a lessor percentage, Northwest are owned and operated by the DirecTV Sports Network.

Boise State men's basketball appeared four times on ROOT Sports Northwest during the 2012-2013 season. Boise State's 2012 football game at Southern Miss was broadcast by Fox Sports South and aired in Boise by ROOT Sports Northwest.
